An open letter to the democratic citizens of Lesvos, Samos and Chios

This letter will begin and end with the same word: gratitude.

It is the gratitude owed to you, not only by us, as representatives of a political spectrum, but by millions of people that live and fight for the principles you have valiantly stood by:
When you took those in need under your wing, as if they were your own children, brothers and sisters, your own family.
When you deprived yourselves, so that you could provide for them, during the harsh austerity years.
When you resisted the pseudo-patriotic siren song of Far-Right rhetoric.
When you took to the streets, to face down state violence, fascist squads and the government contractors that would turn your country into a prison for the innocent.

We had scheduled to visit your islands, to show our gratitude for all you have done. Unfortunately, since we come from a lot of different countries, all of which have had verified cases of COVID 19, we had to postpone our visit. We cannot, in good conscience, endanger you, or the refugees accommodated in your islands, who, in light of recent developments, are considered to be an especially vulnerable group.

It may be a while longer until we can shake you by the hand, but that does not mean we will forget how indebted we are to you:
Our respect to your spirit of humanism is a given.
Our solidarity in your fight is a given.
Our gratitude to your sacrifices is a given.

By the strength of your tenacity, your unconditional humanity, your just demands, we continue to insist on the relocation of all refugees in the member states of the E.U. We stipulate that Greece is not held solely responsible for a Pan-European issue. We fight on!
